Getting Around Las Vegas

Getting around Las Vegas is not hard. Most of the tourist spots are concentrated in three areas - The Strip, downtown and the Convention Center. It's not necessary to rent a car unless you want to do some sightseeing in the outlying areas.

The Las Vegas public transportation options includes a municipal bus system, monorail and the trolley. Taxis are plentiful and are easily found around the casinos and hotels. Navigating your way around Las Vegas is relatively easy.

Walking the Strip allows you to explore the major sights and shopping areas without worrying about the traffic or hunting for parking spaces. The Strip however is very spread out and walking it can be too much for some people. It's best to walk it in sections instead of trying to walk the whole Strip at once.

Las Vegas Transportation Options

Airport Shuttle

The airport shuttle is an option to get to your hotel if you are flying into Las Vegas. It's economical and the shuttles are located outside the terminal. The shuttle companies operate from the airport to The Strip, downtown and the outlying hotels. You can make arrangements for the shuttles outside the baggage claim area. Approximate fares range from $8* to $14*. The shuttles run 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Citizens Area Transit (CAT)

The Las Vegas transit authority (CAT) operates about 36 bus routes throughout the city. They now feature the double decker buses - The Deuce. Buses feature hydraulic lifts for wheelchair users. Bus fares are inexpensive. A one-way fare on the Strip costs approximately $3*. Most popular routes for visitors is route #301 and #302 which cover the Strip from the south to Fremont street. Strip Trolley

Another inexpensive mode of travel along the Strip is the city's trolley service. Designed to resemble cable cars the buses run almost every 15 to 20 minutes. The trolley tends to take longer because it makes frequent stops at the hotels along the Strip and it is not as comfortable with it's wooden seats.

Las Vegas Monorail

The Las Vegas Monorail takes you from one end of the Las Vegas Strip to the other with seven stops in just 15 minutes. Monorail trains arrive every few minutes from 7 a.m. every day (365 days a year) until 2 a.m. on weekdays and until 3 a.m. Friday through Sunday. It runs along a 3.9-mile route from the Sahara Hotel to the MGM Grand. The seven stations are: MGM Grand, Bally's/Paris Las Vegas, Flamingo/Caesars Palace, Harrah's/Imperial Palace, Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas Hilton and Sahara.

Taxis

Finding a taxis in Las Vegas is usually not a problem. Fares start at $3.30* for the first mile and another $2.65* for every additional mile. If you take a taxi from the airport to the Strip it will cost from $12* to $20*. From the airport to Downtown will run between $15* to $25* and between the Strip and Downtown about $10* to $15*. Sharing a cab with others going to the same place will save you money.

Car Rental

Most rental car companies have outlets at the airport and at most major hotels. Rental rates vary but the average price for an economy car is about $25-$35 a day. Most rental cars have automatic transmissions and child seats can be arranged for in advance. To get the best available rate and save money it is best to book your car rental in advance.

Limousine Service

If you want to travel in style you can rent a Limousine. There are many limo operators in Las Vegas. You can arrange for limousine transportation to and from the airport or rent them for about $35* an hour. Prices vary depending on type of limo and services you request.

Las Vegas Parking

Parking in Las Vegas is free at most of the hotels and casinos on the Strip and downtown. High-rise parking garages and valet parking services are available. The city also has many large parking lots and garages. It is customary to tip valets at least $2 when they retrieve your car.
